Throwback Thusday: Sir Francis Akanu Ibiam-a Pace Setter.

History today remembers a man of value,an advocate of better society @Sir Francis Akanu Ibiam born November 29,1906. He was a distinguished medical missionary who was appointed Governor of Eastern Region after Independence (1960-1966). He was decorated Knight of the British Empire (KBE,1940) was also appointed a Knight Commander of the order of St.Michael and St.George (1962.KCMG). Akanu Ibiam is a disciplined man of God with strong work ethics,he was an advocate against injustice,inequitable distribution of the nation’s resources,tribalism and enthronement of mediocrity over meritocracy in civil service and national appointment.

He was the special adviser to the late Biafran warlord @Odumegwu Ojukwu and at some point in the course of the civil war,he tried to broker peace between the two warring parties.He also went to countries like Gabon,Tanzania to plead for humanitarian aids to the Igbo during the war.

He dropped his English name Francis and returned the insignia of his Knighthood as a Knight of the British Empire to protest British government’s open hostility to Biafra.He became the Ezeogo Isiala of Uwana,a traditional ruler of his community.

Sir Francis lived a life worthy of honour,little wonder he was named after airport,schools,flyover such as @akanu ibiam polytechnic,Unwana, @akanu ibiam international airport,Enugu. #ThrowbackThursday #pacesetter #AkanuIbiam #nigeria #knight #KCMG
